Noa
Meaning
movement (Hebrew, the biblical daughters' name, distinct from Noah, 'rest'); today one of Spain's best-loved girls' names, a Dutch favorite, and a modern Japanese given name (乃愛, often read 'my love')
The story
Noa is not simply Noah with one letter removed. In the Hebrew Bible, Noa is one of the five daughters of Zelophehad, sisters who successfully argued that daughters should be allowed to inherit when a father had no sons. Their case became part of biblical law, giving the name a story of women speaking clearly and changing a rule. The Hebrew name is traditionally connected with movement, while the separate masculine Noah means rest. Modern Noa is widely used for girls in Israel and has also become familiar in Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands. Its US curve is young: nearly absent through the twentieth century, then rising in the 2000s, 2010s, and again in the 2020s. Two names may sound almost identical in English, but Noa keeps a history and identity entirely its own.
