Cantonese and Hong Kong names

Cantonese names live in two worlds at once. A child gets a Chinese given name, almost always two characters chosen for meaning AND for how the tones sing against the family name, then often an English name for school and work, sometimes a common one, sometimes an invention all Hong Kong's own (Ekin, Hacken, Eason). The characters carry real weight: 詠 for a life sung like poetry, 浩 for something vast, 傑 for a hero. And because Cantonese romanizes differently from Mandarin, the sounds keep their own music, Cheung not Zhang, Wong not Wang, the little dragon Siu-Lung that the world came to know as Bruce Lee.
