Desmond
The story
Desmond began as an Irish place and surname, from Deasmhumhain, south Munster, the old kingdom in the far southwest of Ireland; the Gaelic surname Ó Deasmhumhnaigh marked someone from there. The FitzGeralds who ruled the region as Earls of Desmond made it a name of power for centuries. In the twentieth century it took on a very different resonance through Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, whose warmth and moral courage during the fight against apartheid gave the name a worldwide association with conscience and good humor. It also carries a musical charm, from the Beatles line about Desmond and Molly to the cool jazz of Paul Desmond. In the United States it has been quietly rising and reads as current as ever, an heirloom Irish surname worn now as an easy, warm first name that manages to sound both dignified and kind.
