Jalen
Meaning
modern coinage popularized in the 1990s; a favorite especially associated with basketball culture in Black American families
The story
Jalen is a modern American invention with an unusually precise origin story. Its great bearer is Jalen Rose, whose name, as he tells it, was built from James and Leonard, his father and his uncle, and who arrived at the University of Michigan in 1991 as part of the Fab Five, the freshman lineup that changed how college basketball looked and sounded. A trace of the name appears in records in the 1980s, but the leap came in the 1990s, right across the Fab Five years; we cannot prove the connection, but the timing could hardly line up better. Jalen became a special favorite in Black American families, part of a creative naming tradition that builds new sounds rather than borrowing old ones, and it peaked in the 2000s. It has eased since, as pioneer names do once variations crowd in, but Jalen remains the original, the one with the story.
