from an English place surname, from Old English elements meaning long hill or ridge

The story

Landon begins as landscape. The English surname came from an Old English place name built from words for long and hill, better pictured as a ridge stretching across the ground. Much later, that sense of movement found an unusually vivid namesake in American soccer. In 2010, with the United States facing elimination against Algeria, Landon Donovan followed a counterattack into the penalty area. The goalkeeper stopped the first effort, but Donovan reached the rebound and scored in stoppage time. One finish changed the team's position from elimination to first place in its group. The match does not explain the name's use, and it does not need to. It gives Landon a modern scene that echoes the older terrain without pretending the two are connected: a name that began on a ridge, carried through a surname, then appeared at the end of a run toward an open goal.
