Meaning

The story
Adan, written Adán in Spanish, is a form of Adam. Hebrew adam means "man" or "human being." Genesis connects it with adama, "ground," when God forms the human from the earth. The familiar phrase "man of the earth" describes that play on words rather than translating the name literally.
In Leopoldo Marechal’s novel Adán Buenosayres, published in 1948, Adán is a poet whose experiences take the reader through Buenos Aires.
Marechal had a city nickname of his own. During childhood summers in Maipú, his friends called him Buenosaires because he was the only boy in their group from Buenos Aires. His friends’ nickname was spelled Buenosaires, with an i; the novel uses Buenosayres, with a y.
On record since at least the 13th century: Adam de la Halle, a medieval French poet and songwriter from Arras, whose name also appears as Adan.
