The most popular baby names around the world

The official birth records of 16 countries and regions, compared side by side.

How to read this page

Read straight from the official records of the United States, Canada, England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, New South Wales, South Australia, France, Spain, Mexico City, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Chile, Montevideo and Brazil.

There is no world rank here. Each list is one record’s own, in its own year and on its own basis, and every figure names both. What this page adds is the comparison across the records: which names run everywhere, which appear on one record only, and which are crossing between languages.

Sofiais in the latest top 100 of 16 of the 17 lists

Most popular across the records

One list: the average of a name’s share across the 9 birth records that carry a full count of births, absent counting as zero. Not a count of babies.

About the average

One list across the 9 birth records that carry a full count of births for the year and reach 2020: the United States, Canada, England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, France, Puerto Rico and Chile. A name’s figure is the average of its share in each record, on that record’s own basis, with an absent name counting as zero there.

This is not a count of babies. It says how strongly a name runs across these places, so a name that is big everywhere beats one that is huge in a single country. New South Wales publishes only a top 100, South Australia and Montevideo stop years earlier, Spain and Brazil count people of every age and Mexico City and Argentina count the parts of compound names rather than babies, so they stay off the average and appear on the board below. Where a registry counts each spelling separately, its leading spelling stands for the name across records (Ireland’s Rían stands for Rian); the other spellings keep their own rows and their own counts, and are never added together.
