The story
Ahmad is a superlative before it is anything else: Arabic for "most commendable, most praiseworthy," an intensive form of Hamid, so the praise is built into the grammar itself. The name carries unusual weight in Islam. In a Quran passage, Jesus foretells a messenger "whose name is Ahmad," and some Islamic traditions hold that Ahmad was another given name of Muhammad himself. History added a scene worthy of that billing: in 1747, by the account passed down, an advisor crowned Ahmad Shah Durrani by fixing a sprig of greenery to his cap, and the man under that improvised crown went on to found the Durrani Empire, often regarded as the beginning of modern Afghanistan. American ears may place the name at the piano instead: the jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal took the name on converting to Islam and spent a long career quietly living up to it. A name that promises the best, and brings witnesses.
