Meaning
variant of Alfonso, traditionally explained as "noble and ready"
The story
Alphonso is a variant of Alfonso, a name borne by kings in Spain and Portugal and traditionally explained through Germanic elements meaning "noble" and "ready". The qualification matters: historical forms may have merged, and the first element remains disputed. Footballer Alphonso Davies gives that old name family a personal modern journey. He was born to Liberian parents in a refugee camp in Ghana and resettled with his family in Canada at five. In 2020, UNHCR announced an online football fundraiser with Davies and fellow former refugee Asmir Begović. The proposed format included teams from countries where they had been born and lived, a football map of the journeys behind the players. The following year, Davies became the agency’s first footballer and first Canadian Global Goodwill Ambassador, advocating opportunities for refugees.
