Meaning
loving (from Latin Amantius); borne by businessman Amancio Ortega
The story
Amancio's gentle Latin meaning belongs to a history older than its familiar modern bearers. It is a Spanish form of Amantius, "loving," with Portuguese Amâncio alongside it. Several early saints bore Amantius. The name was sometimes confused with Amandus in the record, a reminder that similar forms can become entangled without sharing an identical history. That early Christian chapter precedes the Amancio remembered on a football pitch in Brussels. In Real Madrid's account of the 1966 European Cup final, he beat his marker and shot low to equalize against Partizán. Serena later supplied the winning goal. The sequence matters: Amancio brought his team level, opening the way for a teammate to complete the comeback. A name from the early saints' records had acquired a vivid sporting association, with a precise place in a shared victory.

Not on the record in Mexico City, Puerto Rico, England and Wales, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland and Poland: those registries withhold small counts, so rare uses may sit below their floors.

Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the Austria record for 1984 to 2025: Statistik Austria publishes every first name down to a single birth, so this name was not given there in those years (before 2010 the record covers babies with Austrian citizenship only).
