Arda is Turkish, traditionally linked to an old word for a scepter or a marker stake, the rod planted to claim ground, and it is also the name of a river that rises in Bulgaria's mountains and winds through Thrace. Readers of Tolkien know it from somewhere else entirely: Arda was his name for the world itself. The name's living fame belongs to Arda Güler, the Turkish playmaker Real Madrid signed from Fenerbahçe at eighteen, celebrated for a left foot that bends shots into far corners and hailed at home as the future of Turkish soccer.
