The story
Arnoldo belongs to an old Germanic compound of eagle and power or authority, carried into Italian through Arnaldo and Arnoldo. Two modern lives give those imposing elements practical work. In Venezuela, physician Arnoldo Gabaldón led malaria-control efforts that PAHO credits with eliminating transmission from large areas by 1948. In Italy, publisher Arnoldo Mondadori began more quietly, cleaning dusty type boxes and an unused hand press in an Ostiglia print shop. His later Oscar paperback series put inexpensive books on weekly sale at newsstands, reaching readers who rarely entered bookshops. One bearer helped clear a disease from communities; the other widened the places where a reader could meet a book. Together they move Arnoldo beyond its formidable roots and into two histories of public access: to health and to reading.
