Arnoldo
Meaning
the Spanish and Italian form of Arnold, from Germanic arn, eagle, and wald, power, rule
The story
Arnoldo is Arnold with a Latin ending: the old Germanic elements arn and walt, eagle and power, worn into Italian and Spanish shape. The reference books genuinely disagree about whose name it is, one filing it as a rare Italian variant, another as simply the Spanish equivalent of Arnold, and its bearers split the difference. Arnoldo Mondadori founded in 1907 what became Italy's largest publishing house; Arnoldo Gabaldón, the Venezuelan physician, led the campaign that drove his country's malaria cases to nearly zero during the 1950s. The American record kept a modest, steady column: present from the 1910s onward, 834 boys in the 1990s, 277 in the 2010s. Brazil's 2022 census counted 2,947, most of them born by the end of the 1970s. A name that never needed a crowd, just the occasional bearer worth the ink.
