Names like Blessy, Jessy, and Shiny are not borrowings of existing English names but new creations in English material, a naming tradition confident enough to coin rather than copy. The film director Blessy gives it public standing in Kerala, where it is worn by both women and men. It is rare in US records since 1890, traveling with the Malayali diaspora. A blessing that never existed in England: English words, Kerala grammar, entirely its own thing. Its rarity here does not make it new or culturally unrooted.
