Meaning
traditionally 'a Breton', from Old French for a person from Brittany
The story
Brett is Old French for a Breton, a medieval ethnic label for the Celtic people across the Channel that became an English surname and then a first name, which makes it a cousin of Brittany by etymology as well as by era. American use starts in the 1930s, climbs through the one-syllable surname vogue of mid-century alongside Scott, Todd, and Kirk, and reaches its peak in the 1990s before easing steadily. Brett's appeal never really changed across that run: it is a complete name with the brevity of a nickname, it sounds equally right on a quarterback and a novelist, and it carries its medieval passport so lightly that most bearers go a lifetime without learning they are, technically, named a nationality.
