Meaning
friend, pal (affectionate English nickname); famously borne by Buddy Holly
The story
Buddy is barely a name at all by origin: the affectionate American word for a friend, warmed into a given name by parents who simply liked how it sounded. Its strongest showing in the records came in the 1920s, an era of barnstormers and vaudeville kids, and it already had decades of use behind it when Charles Hardin Holley of Lubbock, Texas, put on his glasses and became Buddy Holly. In barely two years of stardom he recorded That'll Be the Day, Peggy Sue, and Everyday, then died in the 1959 plane crash later mourned as the day the music died. He was twenty-two. The name drifted out of fashion in the decades that followed and now reads as pure vintage warmth: a name that promises, right there on the birth certificate, exactly what it means. A friend.

Births registered in South Australia (not all of Australia) by first name and year of registration, 1944–2017, from the state’s Births, Deaths and Marriages registry, which publishes every name down to a single birth in capitals; a spelling its export repeats inside a year is counted once, and from 2018 only a top 100 is published, so the series ends at 2017. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the Austria record for 1984 to 2025: Statistik Austria publishes every first name down to a single birth, so this name was not given there in those years (before 2010 the record covers babies with Austrian citizenship only).
