"heavenly, of the sky"

Also written Céleste.

The story

Celeste reaches the sky by a direct route: it comes from Latin caelestis, heavenly, which is related to caelum, sky or heaven. In Spanish and Portuguese, celeste can also describe the pale blue of the sky. Yet one of the name's most memorable stories happened at street level. On 25 April 1974, Lisbon restaurant worker Celeste Caeiro was carrying red and white carnations when she encountered soldiers during the military uprising that ended Portugal's dictatorship. She gave a flower to a soldier, who placed it in his rifle; other people followed. The peaceful images helped give the Carnation Revolution its name. Caeiro did not plan a symbol or command a movement. She simply had flowers that could not be used for the restaurant celebration originally intended. That accident gives Celeste a wonderfully human history: a name of the heavens attached to a woman whose small, practical gesture helped color a revolution on the ground.
