Meaning
"living" (Hebrew ḥaya); considered a feminine form of Chaim
The story
Chaya means living in Hebrew, from the root chai, life, and is considered a feminine form of Chaim. The American records show a name that never surged and never slipped: about 25 girls in the 1940s, a few hundred a decade through midcentury, about 2,200 in the 1990s, about 3,600 in the 2000s, about 4,100 in the 2010s, and about 2,900 so far this decade, seven decades of stairs climbed one at a time, with the chai root carrying its full weight the whole way. Brazil's census counts a young handful, median age five. Few names state their wish so directly: to live. Chaya says it in two syllables and has kept saying it for the better part of a century.
