Claudia
Meaning
lame (from the Roman clan name Claudius); famously borne by Claudia Rankine, contemporary poet known for Citizen: An American Lyric
The story
Claudia was a Roman clan name before it was anyone's first name, the feminine of Claudius, traditionally traced to claudus, a Latin word meaning lame; Romans wore such names as badges of lineage rather than description, and the Claudii were among the most powerful families in Rome. A Claudia even appears in the New Testament, sending greetings in one of the letters of Paul. The name has lived comfortably across Europe and Latin America ever since, and it has never been out of the American records: its strongest US run came in the 1990s and 2000s, and it holds steady today. Contemporary readers may think first of Claudia Rankine, whose 2014 book Citizen: An American Lyric blended poetry, essay, and image into a landmark account of race in America. Claudia remains what it has long been, polished and quietly classical.
