Meaning
Brazilian Portuguese form of David, traditionally "beloved"
The story
Davi is a Portuguese form of David familiar in Brazil, spoken with the stress on the last syllable. Through David it carries the traditional Hebrew interpretation “beloved.” Its biblical associations begin well before the crown. In the First Book of Samuel, the young David takes off Saul’s unfamiliar armor, chooses smooth stones and uses a sling to defeat Goliath.
The biblical account continues into David’s kingship over Israel and Judah and his capture of Jerusalem, which becomes his royal base. Jewish tradition also associates him with the Psalms. Many of the book’s headings attribute songs to David, though those headings do not establish that he wrote the whole collection.
Recent Brazilian use is a substantial chapter of its own. The 2022 census counted 876,593 residents with the first name Davi, with a median age of 8. The census describes people living in the country at that point. A São Paulo state-school count in 2024 also found Davi the most common boy’s name in first through fifth grade.
