The story
Donna is the Italian word for lady, adopted into English as a given name and doubling, in midcentury America, as a feminine answer to Donald. It had been climbing since the 1920s, one of the warm, compact names the postwar years favored. Then came its doo-wop moment: in 1958 Ritchie Valens wrote a ballad for his high school sweetheart, Donna Ludwig, and 'Donna' rose to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 early the next year. The name's own American peak came in 1959, right alongside the song. No one can prove the radio did it, but the calendar makes a persuasive case. Donna drifted back down as the century turned, the way midcentury favorites do, yet for the length of one slow dance it was the most romantic word in America.
