Meaning

“Pet form of Donald, from Scottish Gaelic Domhnall, meaning world ruler.”

The story

Donny is an English affectionate form of Donald. Donald comes through Scottish Gaelic Dòmhnall from an old Celtic compound usually interpreted as world ruler, a name borne by early kings and carried widely through Scotland and its diaspora. Don and Donnie are close variants, while Donny became familiar enough to appear on birth certificates by itself. The American curve begins in the 1930s, rises through the 1950s, holds a modest level into the 1980s, and then becomes sparse, with small later returns. Singer Donny Osmond gave the spelling a highly visible bearer during the 1970s, but the nickname and its parent name were already established. Donny's tone is friendly and youthful; its ancestry is unexpectedly royal. The short form does not erase Donald's old Gaelic history, it makes that history sound at home in everyday speech.
