Meaning

“Jehovah is God”

The story

Elliot did not start as a first name at all. It is a surname, and behind the surname is a medieval English pet form of Elias, which is the Greek shape of Elijah, whose Hebrew name is traditionally read as the Lord is God. So the meaning families see on a name page belongs to Elijah, three languages back, and Elliot inherits it the way a great-grandchild inherits a nose. The spelling stayed unsettled: Elliot, Elliott and Eliot are all live, which is why our search folds them together rather than pretending they are strangers. In US records it climbed slowly and then decisively: about 1,900 babies in the 1970s, 5,400 in the 1990s, 8,300 in the 2000s, and more than 22,000 in the 2010s. It is a surname name that never sounded like a surname.

People who have or have had a Norwegian ID number, emigrants left out, from Statistics Norway’s name statistics (release of January 2026): by year of birth for 1945–2020 (everyone born that year who was ever registered in Norway, including people who registered later and people who have since died) and by year of naming from 2021; only first names carried by 200 or more living people are listed, counts under 4 are withheld, and SSB merges spellings that differ only by letters outside the Norwegian alphabet. The shares are SSB’s own, of the people of that sex and year in that count; the 2025 figure counts the children named that year, and no year is a count of births.
