Erling is Old Norse, the descendant of the jarl, the heir of the chieftain, a name more than a thousand years old that Norwegian parents have never stopped using; medieval Norway counted powerful men like Erling Skjalgsson among its bearers. For most of its life it stayed home in Scandinavia, rarely traveling far. Then Erling Haaland happened: the towering Norwegian striker who broke the Premier League's single-season scoring record in his very first year at Manchester City and made goal-scoring look like a law of physics. In American records Erling showed barely a trace until the 2020s, when it flickered onto the chart for the first time, right as Haaland became one of the most famous athletes alive. We cannot prove the connection, but the timing is hard to ignore. A chieftain's name, it seems, waited a millennium for its striker.
