The story
Everett is the surname form of the old Germanic Everard, traditionally brave as a boar, a warrior's compliment from a world where the boar was the fiercest thing in the forest. In America the name has a distinguished echo: Edward Everett, the celebrated orator who spoke for two hours at Gettysburg in 1863 immediately before Lincoln delivered his two minutes, and for whom the city of Everett, Massachusetts is named. As a first name it was a familiar presence in the early decades of the twentieth century, the era of Harveys and Chesters, then spent the postwar years in a long, dignified doze. The revival came with the wider return of vintage boys' names: from the 2000s Everett climbed sharply, and its strongest numbers on record belong to the 2010s and 2020s.
