Ewen and Ewan are the same Highland name in different jackets: both anglicize the Scottish Gaelic Eòghann, traditionally read as "born of the yew tree," the tree that outlives the churchyards it stands in. The e-spelling has the older look on paper, and its American record is genuinely odd: five boys in the 1910s, five in the 1920s, then eight straight decades of published silence. The return is modest but real, 49 boys in the 2000s, 69 in the 2010s, and 78 so far this decade, already past the full 2010s total with years still to count. Ewan carries the bigger modern line; Ewen is the same name with more elbow room, and the record shows it traveling again. A yew does not mind which way you spell it. Both spellings are wood from the same tree.
