Meaning

flying wild goose (飛鴻); given name of Wong Fei-hung, the Qing-era folk hero, martial artist and physician mythologized in over 100 Hong Kong films

The story

Fei-Hung can make a claim very few names can: it generated an entire film series, and the record-keepers noticed. The historical Wong Fei-hung, born Wong Sek-cheung, lived from 1847 to 1925, a martial artist, physician, and folk hero who practiced in nineteenth-century Guangzhou. Since 1949, over 100 films and television series featuring him have been produced, mostly in Hong Kong, and the series holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running film series. Kwan Tak-hing played him in over 70 films; Jackie Chan played him in Drunken Master in 1978; Jet Li carried him through Once Upon a Time in China from 1991. The collection records the name's reading as flying wild goose. In American birth records it is absent, as expected for a romanized Cantonese pairing. One nineteenth-century physician's name became a role that Hong Kong cinema has never stopped recasting.
