Meaning

from the Latin Firminus, 'firm'; honors Saint Fermin, co-patron of Navarre, celebrated in Pamplona

The story

Fermin comes from the Latin Firminus, firm, and belongs to the third-century bishop remembered as Pamplona's great saint, co-patron of Navarre, said to have been ordained in Toulouse and martyred in Amiens. For one week every July his city repays the debt: the festival of San Fermín, from the sixth to the fourteenth, sends runners down 825 meters of narrow street ahead of six bulls, a spectacle Ernest Hemingway wrote into The Sun Also Rises and the world has followed since. The American record keeps a quieter Fermin: a steady presence since the 1910s, 765 boys in the 1990s, 176 so far this decade. The Basque spelling goes without the accent, the Spanish wears one, Fermín, and both answer to the same bells. Few small names own a bigger week.
