The story
Gemma has a second image hidden beside its familiar jewel meaning: a bud on a plant. Latin gemma and Italian gemma can mean both a precious stone and a bud, although the given name developed as a medieval Italian nickname in the jewel sense. One word offers something polished and something still opening. A medieval bearer gives that attractive comparison a firmer historical footing. Gemma Donati was Dante Alighieri’s wife, though the year of their marriage is unknown. After Dante died, she recovered her dowry, which had been confiscated with his property. The record gives us that practical action without telling us how she felt or exactly how the recovery proceeded. Beside the poet’s name, then, is Gemma’s own piece of history: property restored to her, as tangible as the stone in the word.
