The story
Georgia is a genuine classic with the unusual shape to prove it: five-figure decades from the 1910s through the 1950s, including more than 23,000 girls in the 1920s, then a long slide to a floor of about 2,900 in the 1980s, then a rebuild that has run four decades and counting, back to roughly 12,800 in the 2010s and about 12,400 so far in this one. The name is the feminine of George, from Greek georgos, a farmer, literally one who works the earth. What it evokes is American: the state, the song title Georgia on My Mind, the painter Georgia O'Keeffe. Whether a family hears geography or grandmother varies house to house, and the record cannot split them. It is also by now entirely a girls' name; decades have passed since the SSA logged boys.
