Meaning

“Spanish/Italian/Portuguese form of Gustav: possibly 'staff of the Geats', or from Old Slavic Gostislav”

The story

Gustavo is the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese form of Gustav, and Gustav's own story comes with honest doubt: possibly "staff of the Geats", from Old Norse gautr and stafr, though Behind the Name notes the root form Gautstafr is not well attested in the Old Norse period, and the name might instead derive from the Old Slavic Gostislav. What is certain is the crown: six kings of Sweden bore Gustav, including the sixteenth-century Gustav I Vasa. The American record climbed for a century straight, from about 130 boys in the 1910s to about 11,000 in the 2000s. Brazil dwarfs that: about 680,700 Gustavos, median age seventeen, with about 264,000 born in the 2000s alone. A royal name at scale on two continents, with a root the scholars still will not swear to.
