Meaning
modesty, life; famously borne by Princess Haya bint Hussein of Jordan, equestrian and former Sheikha of Dubai
The story
Haya is an Arabic name that carries two lovely senses at once, modesty and life, and its best-known bearer is Princess Haya bint Hussein of Jordan, daughter of the late King Hussein and Queen Alia. She made her own name first as an athlete: an accomplished show jumper, she rode for Jordan at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and later led the international equestrian federation. Her 2004 marriage to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, made her one of the Gulf's most visible royal women, and her dramatic departure from Dubai in 2019, followed by a landmark London court case, kept her in headlines worldwide. The name itself has stayed quiet in America, present only faintly and only recently in the records, a short, soft, meaningful choice that most neighbors will never have met before.
