Meaning

a family pet-name Jhumpa Lahiri uses publicly in place of her formal name Nilanjana; Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Interpreter of Maladies

The story

Jhumpa is a Bengali pet name, the kind a family uses at home, and it became world-famous through a quirk of childhood. Jhumpa Lahiri was born Nilanjana Sudeshna Lahiri; in the Bengali way she had a formal good name and an affectionate everyday one, and when her schoolteachers in Rhode Island found Jhumpa the easiest to say, it simply stuck. She kept it, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for Interpreter of Maladies, her debut collection of stories about Indian and Indian American lives. She then wrote a whole novel about this very custom: The Namesake, whose hero wrestles with his own pet name, Gogol. In US records Jhumpa surfaces only in the 2020s and remains genuinely rare, a soft, unusual sound that carries within it an entire tradition of how families name what they love.

Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on the South Australia record for 1944 to 2017: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the Austria record for 1984 to 2025: Statistik Austria publishes every first name down to a single birth, so this name was not given there in those years (before 2010 the record covers babies with Austrian citizenship only). Not on Norway’s list: Statistics Norway lists only first names carried by 200 or more living people, so rarer names are not shown.
