Meaning

traditionally diminutive of Joseph/Judith

The story

Jody is a short form that learned to stand alone. In English it can grow from Joseph, Josephine, Joanna, Judith, or other Jo names, which is why it has long been used for more than one gender and cannot be reduced to one root. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings gave the name to the boy at the center of her 1938 novel The Yearling, and the successful film followed in 1946. The American curve rises in the 1940s and 1950s, reaches a broad high point in the 1960s and 1970s, and then eases from the 1980s onward. That history explains Jody's flexible feeling: nickname-friendly, but fully established on birth certificates, and familiar across genders even when particular decades leaned one way. Its real meaning depends on the longer name behind a family choice. Sometimes there was no longer name at all.
