Julien
Meaning
“French form of Julian (Roman Iulianus); the root Julius is possibly from Greek ioulos, 'downy-bearded'”
The story
Julien is the French form of Iulianus, says Behind the Name, the Roman name derived from the family name Julius, worn by the last pagan Roman emperor, Julian the Apostate, and by early saints including the legendary Julian the Hospitaller. Julius itself is possibly from the Greek ioulos, "downy-bearded", or alternatively related to the god Jupiter; the source offers both and promises neither. The American record kept a small French-inflected line for decades, about 140 boys in the 1910s and one or two hundred a decade at midcentury, then began climbing and has not stopped: about 520 in the 1980s, about 1,700 in the 1990s, about 3,700 in the 2000s, about 4,300 in the 2010s, about 2,500 so far. An emperor, a wandering saint, a hedged beard, and five straight decades of growth.
