Meaning

the Roman queen of the gods, protector of women and marriage; immortalized by Juno MacGuff in Juno (2007)

The story

Juno reigned as the Roman queen of the gods, protector of women and marriage, the goddess brides invoked, and tradition credits her with making June the classic wedding month. As a given name, though, it barely existed in American records for a century. Then came Juno MacGuff, the sharp-tongued pregnant sixteen-year-old at the center of the 2007 film Juno, whose screenplay won an Academy Award and whose heroine made the name suddenly thinkable; the small climb in the records since then follows right on schedule, though no one can prove the film did it. NASA even sent a spacecraft named Juno to Jupiter in 2011, dispatched to keep watch on her mythological husband. The name remains genuinely uncommon, which is much of its charm: ancient, a little defiant, and still mostly unclaimed.
