Meaning
heroine of the classical Tamil epic Cilappatikaram, of disputed date; her anklet proves her husband's innocence before the court
The story
Kannagi enters Tamil literature with an anklet in her hand and evidence no court bothered to seek. In the classical epic Cilappatikaram, her husband Kovalan tries to sell one of her anklets in Madurai. A goldsmith accuses him of stealing the queen's similar anklet, and the king orders his execution. Kannagi breaks open her remaining anklet: hers holds rubies, while the queen's holds pearls. The smallest object in the room overturns a royal verdict. The epic then moves from proof to fury, and Kannagi's story travels beyond the poem into traditions that revere her as a goddess. The text's date is disputed, but the scene has lost none of its force. Kannagi is the name of a character who confronts power with material evidence and becomes larger than the court that failed her. Literary, fierce, and exact, it still carries the sound of an anklet opening.
