The story
Kazimierz is one of the old Slavic royal compounds, its elements usually read around peace, and for Poles it is a dynasty in one word. Four kings of Poland bore it, among them Kazimierz III, the only one history calls the Great, remembered for rebuilding the kingdom and for the saying that he found a Poland of wood and left one of brick. A royal prince became its saint: Kazimierz, patron of Poland and Lithuania, honored each March 4, the date Polish imieniny calendars keep for the name to this day. Kraków still has a whole district called Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter that began as the Great's new town. In American records the name has stayed below the top 1000 in every decade; it crossed the ocean as Casimir and often faded into nicknames by the second generation. For Polish families it is not rare at all; it is Sunday-best.
