Meaning

from Game of Thrones: the feminine form of the Dothraki title khal, 'warlord'

The story

Khaleesi comes from a title, not a traditional name: in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, first published in 1996, and its television adaptation Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011 to 2019, it is the feminine form of the Dothraki title khal, "warlord", and Daenerys Targaryen gains it when she marries Khal Drogo. The American record's first bucket is the 2010s, the same decade the adaptation aired: about 3,070 girls that decade, and about 2,470 so far in this one. No decade before the 2010s carries a published line: a warlord's title worn as a given name, and a record whose entire published history sits in the adaptation's own decade and the one after it.
