Kyla is the feminine side of the Kyle house, or, as the reference books also allow, simply the sounds ky and la joined: either road arrives at the same warm two beats. It grew up beside Kyle himself, about 485,800 boys in our records, a quiet channel cut beside a famous one. The record built patiently and then bloomed: about 220 in the 1950s, 1,500 in the 1970s, 4,100 in the 1980s, 8,400 in the 1990s, 16,100 in the 2000s, then 9,500 in the 2010s and 3,390 so far this decade.
