Meaning
in Chinese, "lotus" when written 莲 or 蓮; the meaning depends on the characters
The story
For one Chinese route to Lian, the story begins with a character: 莲, traditionally written 蓮, pronounced lián and meaning "lotus." A Japanese painting gives that flower a wonderfully absorbed observer. In Kaihō Yūsetsu's seventeenth-century Zhou Maoshu Admiring Lotuses, a bearded scholar leans against the side of a boat, chin in his hands, watching flowers on a pond. The Met identifies him as the Chinese philosopher Zhou Dunyi, also known as Zhou Maoshu. His essay On the Love of the Lotus compares the flower to a person of virtue, setting it beside the hermit-like chrysanthemum and aristocratic peony. That symbolism belongs to the philosopher's reading of the flower. The word itself means lotus, and other Chinese characters written Lian in Latin letters can mean something else. Knowing the character lets us enjoy the painting without asking four letters to tell every bearer's story.
