The story
Maisie began as a Scottish short form of Mairead, the Scottish Gaelic form of Margaret. Margaret comes through Latin Margarita from a Greek word meaning "pearl." Maisie also has a history as a complete given name. E. G. Withycombe’s 1947 name dictionary already described it as often used independently, especially in the United States.
Henry James’s novel What Maisie Knew, published in 1897, follows a girl moving between her divorced parents’ homes. The adults arrange where she goes; Maisie gradually makes sense of their relationships and competing loyalties. The novel gives a child’s developing understanding a central place in a complicated adult world.
