The story
Maksymilian is the Polish spelling of Maximilian, from the Latin maximus, the greatest, a name Roman families coined and European royalty kept. For Poland it now belongs to one man. Maksymilian Kolbe was a Franciscan friar imprisoned in Auschwitz who, in the summer of 1941, stepped out of a line of prisoners and asked to die in the place of a stranger, a father named Franciszek Gajowniczek. The camp accepted the trade. Kolbe was canonized in 1982, with Gajowniczek present in the crowd, and Polish imieniny calendars honor Maksymilian on August 14, the day of his death. In American records the full Polish spelling has stayed below the top 1000 in every decade, living inside diaspora families while Max does the everyday work. It is a heavy name to carry, and that is precisely why some families choose to carry it.
