Meaning

created by the poet James MacPherson for his 18th-century Ossian poems, probably intended as "smooth brow" from Scottish Gaelic mala and mìn

The story

Malvina was written before she was born: the Scottish poet James MacPherson created the name for his eighteenth-century Ossian poems, probably intending "smooth brow," from Gaelic mala "brow" and mìn "smooth, fine." Europe read Ossian and named daughters accordingly, and so did America, once: 375 girls in the 1910s, 330 in the 1920s, then a long fade to an actual published zero in the 1970s, followed by only single and low double digits since. Argentina is where the name became history. The registry counted 299 newborn Malvinas in 1981, then 5,738 in 1982, the year of the war over the islands Argentines call the Malvinas, then 721 in 1983. A poet's invention became, for one year, a country's statement. Names carry flags sometimes. This one carried an archipelago.
