Marcin is how Poland says Martin, the Latin Martinus, of Mars: a warlike name worn by an unwarlike man, the Roman soldier Martin of Tours who cut his cloak in half at a city gate to clothe a freezing beggar and became one of Europe's most loved bishop-saints. His day, November 11, is a crowded date in Poland: it is the imieniny of every Marcin, it is the country's Independence Day, and in Poznań, whose main street is named for the saint, it is the day the city eats its way through startling quantities of rogale świętomarcińskie, crescent pastries filled with white poppy seed and baked for the occasion since at least the 1860s.
