The name is a recent German coinage of uncertain origin: folk etymology reads it as the French phrase ma vie, "my life," though the community record judges it more likely a Germanized form of Mavis, the old song-thrush name. Whatever built it, Brazil adopted it at speed. The footballer Neymar named his daughter Mavie in October 2023; in 2025 the national registry recorded 7,039 newborn Mavies, the country's #39 name overall, after a 2024 in which it had not appeared in the top 50 at all, and a 2010 census with no record of it whatsoever. The United States line is its own curiosity: 21 girls in the 1920s, a century of nothing, 13 in the 2010s, then 427 so far this decade, already far past any earlier total. A name whose history is happening right now, in Portuguese.
