The story
Miley Cyrus gave the name a famous modern association, but she did not create its whole record. In her case, Miley was shortened from the childhood nickname Smiley. Reference works also note earlier examples, probably used as diminutives of Miles, and the US series contains intermittent entries from the 1890s onward. The scale changes sharply during Cyrus's public career: about 36 girls appear in the 1990s, 5,900 in the 2000s and 6,100 in the 2010s. The overlap is impossible to miss and insufficient to prove a cause. About 3,570 appear so far this decade, and the full published record contains roughly 15,700 girls and 75 boys. Miley therefore has two honest threads: a small pre-Cyrus history and a much larger curve that overlaps her fame. A chart can lay them side by side; it cannot tie them into one explanation.
