The story
Mohamed is among the most common spellings of Muhammad, the Arabic name meaning praiseworthy, borne by the Prophet of Islam and, by many counts, given to more newborn boys worldwide than any other name. In soccer it belongs above all to Mo Salah, the Egyptian forward whose goals made him a Liverpool legend and whose warmth made him a global one; one much-discussed study even credited his presence with softening attitudes toward Muslims among the fans who adored him. In the United States the name's story is one of arrival: scarcely recorded before the later twentieth century, it has grown alongside American Muslim communities, with its strongest run coming in recent decades. That steady climb surely owes more to demography than to any single star, but for a soccer family the name now carries a bonus: praiseworthy by definition, and by example.
