Nia
Meaning
purpose, aim (Swahili, from Arabic nīya); one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, a beloved short virtue name
The story
Nia is three names sharing three letters. In Swahili it means purpose, aim, a borrowing from Arabic niya, and as one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa it became a beloved virtue name in Black American families. In Welsh it is the form of Niamh that the poet T. Gwynn Jones gave to Oisin's beloved in his 1916 poem Tir na n-Og. And it serves as a short form of Antonia and other -nia names. The American record shows the surge: from about 790 girls in the 1970s to about 5,300 in the 1990s and about 8,600 in the 2000s, then an easing to about 6,500 in the 2010s and about 2,900 so far this decade. Three letters that hold a principle, a legend, and a nickname all at once.
