Meaning
modern blend of Nova ('new') and Lee
The story
Novalee sounds as if it might come from a forgotten old language, but its construction is modern and visible. It elaborates Nova with the familiar name ending lee. Billie Letts gave the combination a memorable fictional bearer in Where the Heart Is. Novalee Nation is pregnant, seventeen, and stranded at a Walmart by the boyfriend who drives away with her shoes still in the car. She secretly sleeps in the store until her baby's birth makes hiding impossible. The story that follows is less about the novelty of her name than the community she slowly builds from strangers. The novel did not necessarily invent Novalee, and fiction cannot explain every family's choice. It did show how a newly assembled name could feel complete enough to carry a whole life on the page. Nova contributes an image of newness; lee is a productive sound and ending. Together they become something more intimate than their parts: a name arriving without an ancient pedigree and making a home anyway.

Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years.
