The story

Patsy blossomed out of Patricia, the feminine of the Latin word for noble, and for a stretch of the early twentieth century it stood confidently on its own, peaking in the American records of the 1930s. Its immortal bearer took it from her own middle name: Virginia Patterson Hensley became Patsy Cline, and before a plane crash took her at thirty in 1963 she recorded Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, and Walkin' After Midnight, a catalog so aching and exact that country singers still measure themselves against it. By the time those records were on the radio the name was already past its prime, and it drifted out of everyday use in the decades that followed. Today Patsy sits squarely in vintage territory alongside Peggy and Dottie, an underused classic with one of the great voices of the century attached.
